“My Baby Was Not the Only One Who Had Just Been Born:” The Making of a Mother in Allison Mei-Lei’s A History of Holding
Book Review by Bri Gearhart Staton
Once, in the wee morning hours when my son was six weeks old, I, sleep-deprived and wet with milk, woke to the realization that my baby was missing. Frantic, I overturned the bedsheets, felt his empty crib, looked underneath my bed, and finally, desperate, ran to check the bathroom, where the mirror’s reflection showed I had been holding my sleeping son over my left shoulder the entire time. About the Leaflets
“The Turning Leaflets” project is a quarterly zine created through collaboration between TTLJ staff and members from the writing community. Inside each leaflet is a letter from the editors, 1-2 craft essays and/or book reviews, and an interview with contributors. We source all of this content in-house, by inviting members of our communities to participate, and/or through submissions. If you have a craft essay or a book review you think we’ll love, send it our way!
When we began discussing what this project would look like, we knew we didn’t want it to be just a blog. We wanted more. We wanted something that fostered that community-feel we’re so hungry for all the time. After many months of brainstorming and experimenting, we realized a leaflet (a small, informal way of providing information to an audience) is perfect for our vision. The best news: it’s physical, if you want it to be.
Each “Leaflet” is published on our website alongside a printable file (which, yes, you can fold up as though it really is a leaflet). We’re working to get enough funding so we can print and mail these out ourselves, but in the meantime this feels like a good solution. If you want to help us meet our funding goals, you can donate here–every dollar helps.
